White Sand National Monument is a field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. It is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. Gypsum is water soluble and is therefore very rarely found in nature. However, because White Sands is located in a basin, any dissolved gypsum crystals remain in the area, and are redeposited after evaporation.
